It's "cumulative" because, unlike a single term's GPA, it doesn't reset each semester: every course you complete folds into the running average.
The key thing CGPA does that a simple average can't: it weights each course by how much it's "worth." A 4-credit course pulling a B affects your CGPA more than a 1-credit elective pulling the same grade, because credit hours act as a multiplier.
The formula
CGPA = (sum of grade point × credit hours, across every course) ÷ (sum of all credit hours)

Mistakes that quietly throw off the number
Averaging semester GPAs instead of course-level data. If Semester 1 and Semester 2 had different total credit hours, averaging "3.67" and "3.28" (the two semester GPAs) is not the same as computing CGPA from every individual course. Always go back to course-level grade points and credits when precision matters.
Mixing grading scales. If you transferred schools or took a course on a different scale (say, a 5.0 scale for an AP or IB course), don't average points from two different scales without converting first.
Forgetting to exclude repeated or withdrawn courses. Many schools exclude a withdrawn course entirely, or replace the original grade when a course is retaken — check your institution's specific policy, since the "obvious" calculation can silently include a grade that shouldn't count anymore.
